Ever since it was founded, Los Angeles has been at the forefront of American innovation. From the modern entertainment industry to the tech giants of Silicon Valley, LA has been a major player in the development and evolution of virtually every aspect of America. While Detroit has often been the center of the automotive industry, we here at Suzanne Dranow are proud to know that major innovators are at work in California as well, creating the cars of tomorrow.
We’re talking of course about Tesla Motors, and by creating groundbreaking vehicles that focus on electric energy instead of gasoline power they are leading the way in showing what’s possible in the automotive industry. As such, a closer look at them is something we feel is important.
Tesla Motors was born in 2003 and was created by a small group of engineers in California’s Silicon Valley. The idea was simple – create vehicles that proved that electric cars had the capability of being better than the gas-powered vehicles we’ve relied on for so long.
The engineers focused their early efforts on the AC induction motor patented by Nikola Tesla in 1888. It took several years, but finally in 2008 the Tesla Roadster was launched to much acclaim. Key features included:
- 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds
- Average range of 245 miles per charge
- Powered by lithium ion battery with no reliance on fossil fuels
The Tesla Roadster took the automotive world by storm, and the company sold more than 2,400 of them throughout 30 different countries.
Four years later, in 2012, the Model S was introduced as the world’s first electric sedan. The 7 passenger sedan was exactly what a family vehicle should be, while still providing the power of a sports car and the use of solely electric energy. The vehicle even received the coveted and important 5 star safety rating from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It was so groundbreaking that it was named the 2013 Motor Trend Car of The Year.
2014 saw the introduction of a pair of additional vehicles in the Tesla Motors line, and at the moment there are more than 50,000 Tesla vehicles on the road around the world. The Tesla headquarters and the Tesla factory are both located in California, delivering jobs to the area while also creating stunning vehicles that are continually changing the way the world thinks about cars.
The odds are good that you’ll see more than a few of the Tesla vehicles on the road around California, and there’s also a good chance that you will end up owning one of your own once you see what these amazing vehicles have to offer.
